Frequently Asked Questions

Assembled here are a collection of the more frequently asked questions we have fielded. If you have a question you think we should answer here, please email us at

Question Is there any value in buying a "do-it-yourself toolkit" to get out of paying traffic fines?
Answer DIY is rarely a good idea with anything unless you are an expert at what you are doing. If you are an expert, then it is unlikely that it would be defined as DIY. Whilst much of information in these toolkits can be accurate, there is also a lot of information that is ambiguous and some which is just utter nonsense. The fact is that you cannot get off your traffic fines easily and if you misinterpret or misquote even the most accurate information, you could find yourself in more trouble than when you started.

Question Do you have people who can get my fines squashed?
Answer Sorry, no can do. The one good thing about the AARTO system is that the old practice of giving back-handers to the right people could get you off the hook are gone. About darn time too! At least we hope so - but let's see how long it takes for someone to figure out how to "gyppo" the new system for personal gain. Oh, wait some have already, but not in your favour. We do however offer a fine inspection service and can probably help you in analysing your fine/s as many of them are flawed. Check out our What We Offer page.

Question What is the real meaning of a yellow speed sign board? Isn't that the recommended speed?
Answer A yellow street sign of any kind means that it is a temporary sign. It overrides any instruction on any permanent sign. In the case of a speed sign, it is not a recommendation it is a command! We believe that every driver in this country should have to be re-tested at regular intervals to retain their license, but only after they (the "authorities") sort their abysmal mess out.

Question Are the cops allowed to trap in the construction zones. I am pretty sure they are not but don't know where to find the information. Can you help?
Answer Traffic authorities are only allowed to use camera speed enforcement equipment where they have been granted authority to do so by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). For now, assume they can. Also, don't be a twit! The mayhem that has been caused by the construction zones has increased your chances of getting wiped out by a heavy truck on a freeway 1000 fold! Just listen to the radio any day and you will hear at least one report of a truck wiping someone out or causing major delays in freeway construction zones. Check out our Construction Zones section for more info.

Question Do you know where I can go fast without getting caught?
Answer Yes we do. A race track! When you are on the roads with the rest of us, drive like a civilised human being and stick to the speed limit. We do not support speedsters. We oppose Greed Fines. Numbskull!

Question I know you can get laser jammers and detectors now. Do you know where I can get one?
Answer Yup. Will we tell you? Nope.
Refer to the previous question.

Question What on earth is AARTO?
Answer The Administrative of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) Act, No. 46 of 1998 which was approved by Parliament in 1998. We have put a summary of how it works and affects you with regards speeding here.

Question Can't I just go to the Public Prosecutor and plead my fine down like I used to.
Answer Aikona! That is no longer possible. AARTO has loads of complicated mechanisms to prevent just that. After all, fair Public Prosecutors cost the Metro bundles of money in reducing fines and the business of camera fines does not operate that way. Someone's got to pay all the interested parties you know.

Question Shouldn't I just pay the fine and get the 50% discount like 90% or more of my fellow motorists would? After all, I don't want to get arrested in a roadblock.
Answer Getting arrested is the last thing you want to do. That is just not safe. However, simply capitulating and paying the fine is what is being counted on by the various parties involved in the Greed Fining syndicate. The more people who oppose camera fines, the less lucrative this business will become and they will have to find new ways to rip us off. You also need to remember that when AARTO gets implemented "for real", you could lose your license as well as your money with very little effort!
